Essex is a county of contrasts, where beautiful countryside is complimented by hustling, bustling shopping centres and where culture comes in an abundance. However many may underestimate this county as merely being one of fine cuisine with food and drink shipped in from the regions beyond. However Essex is in fact a region of wonderful farms and beautiful vineyards that produce award winning wines. So here we take a close look at a selection of the area's vineyards that are enough to keep even the most demanding of wine connoisseurs happy.
Dedham Vale Vineyard - Boxted
The Dedham Vale Vineyard is nestled within 40 beautiful acres of English countryside and is home to six styles of wine. There are seasonal walking trails, formal and casual tasting sessions and a wine shop on site. The vineyard also puts on regular events, such as the new (and particularly popular) Wednesday Wine Club as well as 'Music in the Vines', an Open Air Theatre and the ever popular Cider and Wine Festivals.
The venue can also be hired for private events (such as for the most idyllic of weddings and the most impressive of corporate events).
New Hall Vineyards - Purleigh
Set within the charming village of Purleigh this vineyard has been producing delicious wines since 1969. There are 100 acres to be explored and a rich family history that has seen a singular family (the Greenwoods) own and develop the lands to the vineyards that you see today.
The venue puts on year round tours and allows for visitors to take a trip into the extensive stocked cellars (and with numerous awards to their name this is one wine cellar that should be seen and experienced through one of the establishment's taste tests).
Mersea Island Vineyard - East Mersea
The Mersea Island Vineyard makes for a smaller, more compact and decidedly more intimate an experience, although the vineyard churns out over twenty thousand delicious bottles of wine each and every year. Set within just 10 acres this family run vineyard comes complete with hotel and is ideally situated just 2.1 miles outside of Cudmore Grove Country Park. There is a vintage tea room to indulge within (with some of the best tea and cream cakes in the county!) and five key wines to experience.
West Street Vineyard & Visitor Centre - Coggeshall
The West Street Vineyard & Visitor Centre is home to a delicious selection of wines to be indulged within (four in total, which prove to be particularly popular throughout the country). Unlike the other vineyards within the region this establishment offers a variety of wine school courses, which allow for truly dedicated wine fans to learn much about their specialist area of interest. Courses running at the moment include: Saturday Workshop - An Introduction to Wine; Chile and Argentina; Italy; The Loire and Vineyard walk and Wine.
