Managed and run by a team of volunteers, the Bread and Roses project launched in 2021. Thames Sailing Barge May is the last remaining Thames Sailing Barge that was built in Harwich and remains fully rigged.

The Bread and Roses Barge project was established by three women with extensive experience of sailing barges and the hospitality sector. Their passion for creating a new modern, socially-committed future for SB May, with a clear community purpose will provide a supportive and welcoming space to women of all walks of life, through the gentle art of sourdough baking.

Currently, Sailing Barge May is berthed at St.Osyth Boatyard. Since launching the project, the Bread and Roses CIC has supported groups from charities across Tendring with creative and wellbeing workshops, health talks, reiki and yoga sessions and much more aboard.

This summer, working in partnership with Brightlingsea Harbour, visitors have been able to book the local ferry to the barge for Afternoon Tea. Once the winter has passed this will resume!

Work has progressed slowly and thanks to hard working volunteers, donations and pockets of funding, SB May's hold is being transformed and a Community Bakery is due to be installed soon! As well as providing a local bakery, people will be able to come aboard and bake bread on community baking days.

We always welcome volunteers, are happy to host meetings/work training sessions/art exhibitions and would like to continue to support communities across Tendring and long term, further afield- for communities along SBMay's old trading route along the River Colne and Thames.
