Chelmsford Museum sits at the heart of the city’s beautiful Oaklands Park. As well as hosting Essex Regiment Museum in the stunning redeveloped Oaklands House, it is free to visit where you can dig deeper into Chelmsford’s history and discover more about some of the objects in our collections. Take a walk through the story of Chelmsford, from the Ice Age, right through to the present day. See a mammoth, watch a princely Anglo-Saxon burial, and see stunning art by a Turner Prize winner.

Events and activities take place throughout the year and a temporary exhibition gallery has a running programme of exhibitions inspired by those who have lived and still live in Chelmsford and the surrounding districts.

Open from 10am every day, the museum contains a popular gift shop with items inspired by the time periods explored through the galleries, as well as wonderful toys and gifts that can be bought with pocket money! Enjoy breakfast, lunch, or a treat at The Hive café, who are open from 8am every day. Popular with museum and park visitors alike.

Families can enjoy the Explorer Zone which can be found by the entrance of the museum. In this area, you can pick up resources to help your children explore the museum and park. All the resources are free to borrow while you use the museum and includes bags and trails to keep everyone busy. Our wonderful front of house team creates free trails throughout the year themed to the events and activities happening over the school holidays. Perfect for inquisitive and energetic minds!

A popular feature for many visitors, the museum is also the home to an active beehive! It is cared for by the hard-working Chelmsford Beekeepers Association and is available to see all year round (apart from some periods when the bees need a holiday). The beehive is behind a protective glass so the bees can be seen working away. See if you can find the Queen Bee!
