Epping Forest stretches for over 12 miles from east London into Essex and covers over 6185 acres (2503 hectares). As a former Royal Forest, it has played host to Kings and Queens of England as a hunting ground. In the 19th century the City of London fought a ground-breaking legal battle to save it from destruction. Today Epping Forest, with its internationally important ancient trees, historic parkland and flower-rich meadows, provides a truly awe-inspiring backdrop for an interesting and enjoyable day out.

Traditional woodland management techniques, such as pollarding and grazing cattle, provide a rich mosaic of diverse habitats including ancient woodland, ponds and bogs, heathland, wildflower meadows and wood pasture. The Forest supports a wealth of insects and fungi including many rare and vulnerable species. Visitors often enjoy catching a glimpse of the fallow and muntjac deer who live in the Forest.

Visitors of all ages have enjoyed escaping to Epping Forest throughout the centuries. Today the ancient woodland is protected for "recreation and enjoyment" and is one of the most popular visitor attractions on the borders of Essex and London.
