It’s jousting season once again and the grounds of Hedingham Castle are set to ring to the clash of steel on Easter Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday – a medieval spectacular you won’t want to miss!
The astounding Knights Of Middle England return to the Norman Keep for a weekend of stunts and chivalry as the evil Black Knight and his trusty fool wreak havoc against the Earl of Warwick and his noble entourage.
An awesome display of saddle falls, drags and rearing horses awaits, surrounded by a bustling arena full of craft stalls, a range of food and a host of themed entertainment.
Henry Hotspur the UK’s only Rolling Jousting horse for visitors to try their hand at this fantastic skill! Henry is a full-sized rolling horse that thunders (or rides sedately for little ones!) down the list carrying the rider past authentic Jousting practice targets. From very young riders with Mum or Dad sitting behind, to adults riding solo, Henry Hotspur can carry an adult in full medieval armour so come and try your hand!
Plus, there will be have-a-go archery with the Norfolk Longbowmen, period musicians, Maypole dancing and the ever-popular birds of prey.
New for 2021 – Medieval Hand Fasting Ceremonies
Kate Millner, fully trained and experienced independent Celebrant will be offering traditional mini handfasting sessions to couples entering the castle on Joust days in 2021. Kate is no stranger to Hedingham Castle - you may have seen her performing as Judy, the Jester’s long-suffering wife in the Jester and Judy show over the last few years.
Now she brings an opportunity to be “bound” to your loved one in a traditional handfasting ceremony, joyfully witnessed by other supportive visitors to the Joust. You will have the option to don a cloak or a floral circlet, drink from the Quaich cup, offer your own personal words to your loved one as Kate “ties the knot” and to seal the deal by “jumping the broom”. Ceremonies will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis- just add your names to the chalk board as you arrive at Kate’s ceremonial Handfasting tent.
With craft stalls, a variety of food vendors, donkey rides, coconut shies and the Castle Tavern, it’s a full day of excitement, involvement and thrilling spectacle for the whole family!
If you’ve never been to a jousting event at Hedingham before, you must get there over the Easter weekend – be the first to see the knights in action in 2020 and set the tone for a whole season of medieval shenanigans!
DUE TO COVID-19, TICKET SALES WILL RESUME FOR THIS EVENT ONCE WE RECEIVE GOVERNMENT PERMISSION TO DO SO.
